Student Leadership Awards

In collaboration with several other campus offices, the Office of the Dean of Students recognizes students for several awards during the annual Student Leadership Awards ceremony each April. 

For the 2018 Student Leadership Awards:

Nominations:
Nominations may be made by students, staff, or faculty. Self-nominations will be accepted. Nominations for the Lux Service Award, Outstanding Student Leader AwardServant Leadership Award, and Diversity Matters Award will be available from January 16 through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018. 

Nominations for the Lux Service Leader Award, Outstanding Student Leader Award, and Servant Leadership Award are closed at this time. 

Nominations for the Diversity Matters Award are closed at this time. 

Nominees for the Lux Service AwardOutstanding Student Leader Award, and Servant Leadership Award will be contacted regarding the opportunity to submit an application to continue in the selection process on February 12th. Applications are due on Friday, February 23rd at 5:00 p.m. Nominees will receive communication through their UNI email for how to continue in the selection process. 

Timeline: 
Award recipients will be announced at the 2018 Student Leadership Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. 

The Awards:

The Lux Service Award is awarded to graduating senior students each academic year to acknowledge the culmination of their overall involvement. 

The Lux Service Award is the official University seal; it illustrates a burning lamp of knowledge and the Latin word Lux, meaning light. It is conferred in the spirit of keeping the lightof service to others burning brightly at the University of Northern Iowa. The Lux Service Award is the most prestigious award given to graduating senior students each academic year to acknolwedge the culmination of their overall involvement. Recipients consistently go above and behond, leaving a lasting legacy upon graduation. 

The Outstanding Student Leader Award recognizes graduating senior students for the lead they have taken in overall campus involvement. 

The Outstanding Student Leader Award is designed to recognize students who have demonstrated dedication and leadership through their involvement in one or more campus activities. The Outstanding Student Leader Award is given to graduating senior students each academic year to acknowledge the lead they have taken, by recognized title or not, in their overall campus involvement. 

The Servant Leadership Award recognizes students, regardless of academic level, who have worked for the common good while putting the needs of others first. 

The Servant Leadership Award recognizes those who have worked for the common good while putting the needs of others first. In its broadest definition, servant leadership is serving others. This award is focused on recognizing students regardless of their level of academic career at UNI.

The Diversity Matters Awards recognize students, regardless of academic level, who have demonstrated a strong committment and strong contributions to the university's diversity efforts. In partnership with the Chief Diversity Officer, the Diversity Matters Award for students (detailed information found here) is awarded by the Office of the Dean of Students.
